The Château de Fougères, a veritable book of military architecture, shares its secrets with you. Come and discover the history of the largest medieval fortress in Europe, which defended the Duchy of B...
At the turn of the year 1000, the first castle of Fougères was built to defend the north-eastern part of the border zone of the Duchy of Brittany, the Marches de Bretagnes. This primitive fortress, installed at the crossroads of important trade routes, has the main objective of monitoring the powerful neighbors and preventing their incursions into Breton lands. To the north, Normandy belongs to the kings of England, eager for continental expansion. To the east, Anjou and Maine are under the control of the kings of France who intend to assert their domination over the entire kingdom.
Fougères is therefore one of the essential parts of the Duchy's border defense system. For five centuries, the castle was at the heart of the struggles between the powers.According to the battles and the successive lords, the stronghold is constantly improved: the various works campaigns make it a real warship, ready for sieges and built according to the best techniques of each era.
After almost a thousand years of existence, the Château de Fougères today offers an unchanged face. Largest medieval fortress in Europe in this state of conservation, the castle is a true synthesis of the principles of construction of the second half of the Middle Ages. But more still, it offers a testimony of the great struggles and the great epics which made the history of the Marches, the History of the Duchy of Brittany and the history of France.
